A witness against the policemen and civilians who allegedly received drug "payola" or payouts from the Espinosa Drug Group was shot dead in Ormoc City on Friday evening.
Police identified the victim as Ferdinand Rondina, 38, a resident of Ormoc City.
GMA News stringer Robert Dejon said witnesses saw Rondina watching television at his elder sister’s barbeque stall about 7:30 p.m. on Friday when two unidentified persons wearing bonnets fired at him.
When the victim fell to the ground, the suspects again shot Rondina in the face.
His relatives immediately rushed him to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Rondina was reportedly among alleged Eastern Visayas drug lord Kerwin Espinosa’s trusted men in his illegal drug operations.
However, Rondina allegedly stopped his operations after he voluntarily surrendered under Oplan Tokhang in July last year.
Rondina also surrendered to former Albuera, Leyte police head Chief Insp. Jovie Espenido after his name was mentioned by the late Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa to surrender to the police. The elder Espinosa was killed in an alleged shootout in his detention cell on November 5, 2016.
Senior Insp. Joseph Joevil Young, head of the City Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Group, said he finds no reason for Rondina’s killing as it was determined in several test buys that the victim was no longer involved in the drug trade.
“Wala na kaming mabili kaya iniwan na namin. Ngunit tutulong kaming mag-imbistiga sa kanyang pagkamatay baka may kaugnayan pa rin sa druga yan,” Young said.
